Alice Marie H. Benton, age 90, of Marion, IL passed away at 2:40 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2009, in Parkway Manor of Marion, IL.
She was born on December 1, 1918, in Hoyleton, IL the daughter of Benjamin Edward and Lydia Sophie (Gerling) Huck.
Alice was united in marriage to Carl R. Benton on May 10, 1952, in Herrin, IL and together they shared over forty years of marriage until his death, July 13, 1992.
She was a graduate of the Nashville Illinois High School Class of 1937. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion, IL and a former member of the JOY Gospel Choir of the church. Alice was a member of the Ford-Todd Mission Circle, former extension visitor, former Sunday school teacher and pianist for her Sunday School Department for many years. She was a former member of the North Prairie Methodist Church of Hoyelton, IL where she played the piano for the church for many years and was a member of the Marion Woman’s Club. Alice made over 100 quilts, most to be given to her family. She also sold some of her quilts donating the funds to the “First Baptist Church Gym Building Fund”. She was a bookkeeper for the Mineweld Company for sixteen years and was in the accounting department with E. Blankenship & Company in Marion, until her retirement in 1981.
She is survived by her stepson and his wife, Darrell R. and Pat Benton of Rockwall, TX; stepson-in-law and wife, Billy G. and Jean Harless of Glendale, AZ, nine step grandchildren, fifteen step great-grandchildren, numerous other family members and many lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; brother, Oliver Stanley Huck and stepdaughter, Beverly Jean Benton Harless.
She loved her family and many friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Arrangements for Alice Marie H. Benton were entrusted to the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street, of Marion, IL.
A time of visitation for family and friends was from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd, at the funeral home.
The funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Dickerson presiding.
The prelude and postlude musical selections were presented by pianist, Byron Corzine.
Special vocal musical selections presented were “The Eastern Gate” and “How Great Thou Art” by vocalist, Brian Summers, and “Amazing Grace” as a congregational hymn with pianist, Byron Corzine, accompanying.
Interment followed next to her husband in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville, IL.
Pallbearers were Jerry Cunningham, Bob Ausbrooks, Richard Shockley and Gary Troxel.
Following the committal service at the cemetery the family and friends gathered at First Baptist Church of Marion, IL for a meal and continued time of fellowship.
For those who preferred memorial contributions were made to “First Baptist Church Building Fund”. Memorial contribution envelopes were available at the funeral home or were mailed in care of Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, P.O. Box 370, Marion, IL 62959.
