Robert Ray “Bob” Logan, age 86, of Marion, IL passed away at 4:40 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2010 after a brief stay at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin, IL.
Bob was born in Neoga, IL on December 5, 1923 the son of Ray and Hazel Dell (Gordon) Logan.
He grew up in Ashland, IL and graduated from Ashland High School with the class of 1941. Bob was very active in all sports and was the recipient of numerous medals and ribbons for his achievements in track, basketball and baseball. Bob’s employment began in Virginia, IL where he worked a short time for the local phone company and later accepted employment in Springfield, IL with the First National Bank until his induction into the United States Army on March 12, 1943. He served his country for the next three years where he trained in the 465th Airborne (Glider) Field Artillery Battalion. He later shipped out to serve eighteen months in the Pacific Theater (New Guinea, South Philippines and the Luzon Campaigns) where he served as a survey instrument man.
Bob was awarded three Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for wounds received in Luzon. He also received the Good Conduct medal and was qualified as a carbine expert. Following his period of faithful service he was discharged on December 24, 1945.
Following his return from the War he attended and was a graduate of Purdue University in Lafayette, IN. Following his Engineering education at Purdue, Bob was employed by Central Illinois Public Service Company in Springfield, IL in 1950 where he held engineering positions in the substation department. In December of 1960 he was transferred to the Southern Division in Marion, IL where he served as substation engineer until his retirement in 1988.
Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marion, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Heyde-Pillow Post 1301 of Marion and was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Sportsmen’s Club of IL.
On April 1, 1950 he was united in marriage to Doraline “Dodie” Donovan at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia, IL and together they enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Dodie Logan of Marion, IL; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kelly Logan of Marion and Kevin and Toni Logan of Brandon, MS; daughter and son-in-law, Kerri and Dennis Winn of Marion. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Katie Lutz and husband, Joseph of Augusta, GA, Ben Logan of Brandon, MS and Chase and Cole Winn both of Marion; great-granddaughter, Averie Logan Lutz of Augusta, GA and two step-granddaughters, Jayma and Lindsey Hamlin both of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Danenberger.
Arrangements for Robert Ray “Bob” Logan were entrusted to the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street, of Marion, IL.
A time of visitation for family and friends was from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5th, at the funeral home.
The funeral service was at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home with Rev. Cindy Bean and Rev. Dan Whitfield presiding.
The prelude and postlude musical selections were presented by pianist, Nancy Doerge.
Special vocal musical selections presented were “It Is Well With My Soul” and “The Lord’s Prayer” both by vocalist Granger Odum with pianist Nancy Doerge accompanying.
The service concluded with the presentation of the recorded musical selection “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill.
Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, IL.
Honorary pallbearers were John Dingrando, George Jensen and Frank Savka.
Active pallbearers were Chase Winn, Dennis Winn, Terry Stevens, Ben Logan, Cole Winn and Jim Yearack.
Military honors were accorded at the graveside by members of the V.F.W. Heyde-Pillow Post No. 1301, American Legion Post No. 147 and the Illinois National Guard all of Marion, IL. Those participating were Commander, Larry Largent; Chaplain, Dan Fruge; Bugler, Bill Deaton; Officer of the Day, Pat Campbell; Color Guard, Jessie James and Bill Reynolds; National Colors, Ernie Rinella; V.F.W. Post Colors, Calvin James; American Legion Colors, Ralph DeVasier and Firing Squad, Dustin Whitehead, Dale Heltsley, Brian Samuel, Dale “Squeek” Wilson, Ron Russell, Ronald Ganzer and Don Burgrabe. Presentation of the V.F.W. Bible to Dodie was by Roger Hines.
Illinois National Guard members participating in folding of the flag were SGT Brandon Page, PVT Garrett Brown and SGT David Kemner. Presentation of the flag to Dodie was by SGT Brandon Page.
Following the committal service at the cemetery the family and friends gathered at the First Presbyterian Church for a meal and continued time of support and fellowship.
For those who preferred memorial contributions were made to “First Presbyterian Church” or “Hospice of Southern Illinois”. Memorial contribution envelopes were available at the funeral home or were mailed in care of Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, P.O. Box 370, Marion, IL 62959.
