Charles Ray Phillips

June 11, 1944 - July 13, 2020

Charles R. Phillips, age 76, of Pittsburg, IL, passed away suddenly at 12:23 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2020, in Heartland Regional Medical Center of Marion, IL. He was born on Sunday, June 11, 1944, in Creal Springs, IL, the son of James Dolliver and Lillian Marie (Malcolm) Phillips. Charles was united in marriage to Mary Sue Segers on Saturday, September 29, 1962, at the home of her parents in Creal Springs and together they have shared over 57 years of marriage. His working career was as a painter on the assembly line for many years with the Norge Company that later became the Maytag Company of Herrin, IL, until his retirement in December of 2006. Charles was a Christian and of the Baptist faith and he and Mary attended for years at the First Baptist Church of Marion. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time in the outdoors camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed watching the old westerns on television daily and spending time with his two dogs; Bailey and Zoey. His family was a very important part of his life and he was always interested in hearing about all of their activities, especially those of his grandchildren. He loved it when the grandchildren would stop by just to visit and spend some treasured time together. The many memories that have been created will now be treasured by those he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Phillips of Pittsburg; son, Christopher Ray Phillips of Herrin, IL; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Lea and Brian Valentine of rural Golconda, IL and Kathrin Tonya and Robert Myers of Fulton, NY; thirteen grandchildren, Jesse J. Phillips and Dakota Morris and his wife, Mary all of Johnston City, IL, Brittany Marie Valentine, Jessica Lynn Valentine, Joshua David Valentine all of Paducah, KY, Christina Anne Valentine of Marion, IL, Cecilia Faye Valentine, Julianna Rose Valentine, Jeremy Scott Valentine and Tyler James Valentine all of Golconda, IL, Robert Lewis Myers, IV, and Nicolas Charles Myers and his wife, Elizabeth all of Davenport, IA and Mary Hannah Regina Myers of Fulton, NY; great grandson, Parker Charlie Dean Myers of Davenport, IA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gereldine and Jerry Winters of Carrier Mills, IL and Barbara and Harold Meneese of Herrin, IL, other extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death his parents; four sisters, Geneva, Carol, Priscilla and Emma and three brothers, Deon, Harry and Gilbert. Arrangements were entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion. DUE TO HEALTH CONCERNS RELATED TO THE COVID-19 VIRUS AND BY THE SIGNING OF EXECUTIVE ORDER BY THE ILLINOIS GOVERNOR, it was recommended if you were planning on attending the visitation or service please wear a mask and social distance yourself from others. The time of visitation was from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at the funeral home. During the time of visitation, a “Reflection of Life” DVD Memorial Tribute featuring special people, places and events in Charles’ life was presented to the family and friends. Following the time of visitation, the funeral service was at 1:00 p.m. with his sons-in-law, Brian Valentine and Robert Meyers presiding. Special comments of memory were made by Charles’ grandson, Jesse Phillips; friends, Tony Holmes, Ronnie Troxel, Justin Powell and son-in-law, Robert Meyers. The prelude and postlude were recorded piano musical selections. Special vocal musical selections presented during the service were, “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” by Elvis Presley, “From a Jack to a King” by Ned Miller and “When I’m Home” by Joey + Rory. Interment followed at McKinney Chapel Cemetery, located near the Lake of Egypt in Williamson County. Pallbearers were Robert Meyers, Jesse Phillips, Josh Valentine, Robert Meyers IV, Dakota Moris and Nicholas Meyers. Honorary pallbearers were Jeremy Valentine and Tyler Valentine. Following the committal service at the cemetery the family and friends gathered at Charles and Mary’s home for a meal and continued time of fellowship and support. For those who preferred memorial contributions were made to “Williamson County Animal Control” to be used for the benefit of animals.
