William J. “Bill” Novick, age 91, of Marion, IL passed away suddenly at 12:30 p.m., on Monday, January 23, 2012, at his home. He was born in West Frankfort, IL on Thursday, January 20, 1921, the son of Alex and Rose Novick. He was united in marriage to Clara Ruth Paul on Friday, September 16, 1949, in Piggott, Arkansas. Together they shared over 57 years of marriage until her death on January 13, 2007. In his early years, he followed his brothers to the Detroit, Michigan area to work in various factories. In 1942, he answered the call of this nation and proudly enlisted into the United States Navy, and became a Navy pilot, serving during WW II and afterwards until the time of his honorable discharge in 1947. After his discharge, he decided to become an attorney. After attending Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL, he enrolled in St. Louis University Law School and graduated in 1951. He first practiced in the Chicago area as a staff attorney for Ford Motor Company. Due to his love for Southern Illinois he moved back to the area. In 1954, he became an associate with August L. Fowler, and later formed the partnership of Fowler & Novick until Mr. Fowler retired. At that time he formed a partnership with his oldest son, William P. Novick, where they practiced under the firm name, Novick Law Office. He was still active in the practice of law until 2011, just short of 60 years after he was admitted to practice. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, IL where he taught Sunday school in his younger years. In addition to caring for his family, he was civic minded and especially enjoyed his membership in the Marion Lions Club. He also established the non-profit corporation, Hearts Helping Hearts, which raised money originally for the former Marion Memorial Hospital and continues to this day. For many years he was a member and past president of the Marion Carnegie Library Board and was instrumental in forming and served for many years as director of the Shawnee Library System. In the year 1998, he received the “August L. Fowler Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Greater Area Marion Chamber of Commerce, representing dedication and devotion to his profession for 40 years or more. He was surprised and especially proud of receiving such a distinguished award. He is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, William P. and Paula Novick of Marion, IL and Walter E. Novick of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren, Adam R. Novick and his special friend, Felicia Michelson, both of Marion, IL, Jay A. Novick and his wife, Devon, of Herrin, IL, Riley A. Novick of Marion, IL, Alex J. Novick of Scottsdale, AZ, Hannah S. Novick of San Francisco, CA and Thomas Parshudie of Carbondale, IL ; great-granddaughter, Leah A. Novick, of Marion, IL; great-grandson, Dax May, of Herrin, IL; two sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Clem and Rosemary Wilkas all of Springfield, IL, many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; three brothers, John, Walter and Alex Novick and two sisters, Rose Oller and Vera Williford, with whom he shared a special fondness. Arrangements for William J. “Bill” Novick were entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street, of Marion, IL. The time of visitation was on Thursday, January 26th, between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. During the time of visitation a “Reflection of Life” DVD Memorial Tribute featuring special people, places and events of Bill’s life was presented to the family and friends. A Celebration of Life Service was at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2012, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home with Rev. Bryce Parks presiding. Comments of memory were presented by Mr. Novick’s sons, Bill and Walter; grandson, Adam Novick; longtime friend and professional colleague, Attorney James Bleyer and Lions Club member, Sam Stotlar. The prelude and postlude musical selections were recorded piano selections. Special instrumental piano musical selections presented during the service were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “This Is My Father’s World”. Interment followed next to his wife in Rose Hill Cemetery of Marion, IL. Active pallbearers were Jay Novick, Alex Novick, John Willford, Robert Wilkas, Tim Webber and Raymond Lawler. Heyde-Pillow Post No. 1301, American Legion Post No. 147 and the Illinois National Guard Flag Detail, all of Marion, IL. Those participating were Commander, Larry Largent; Chaplain, Dan Fruge; Officer of the Day and Bugler, Bill Deaton; National Flag, Ernie Rinella; V.F.W. Flag, Ron Ganzer; Color Guard, Ralph DeVasier and Jessie James and Firing Squad, Don Burgrabe, Nate Hopkins, Ned Padget, Bill Reynolds, Brian Samuel, Jerry Swisher and George Trammell. Presentation of the spent cartridges from the rifle salute to Bill’s son, William was by Nate Hopkins. The National Guard Flag Detail members participating in the folding of the flag were Specialist Corey Brinkley and Specialist Aaron Robinson.
